Don't let fear keep you from hearing from God

Study to show thyself approved unto God,a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth  2 Timothy 3:16

Are you one of those many Christians would like to get a personal message from God, but are unsure of how to bring this about? Some of us flip randomly through the Bible, hoping to land on a passage that will speak to our situation. Well, with over 800,000 words in the WORD, GOD definitely has something to speak into our lives.

An old joke talks about a man who went to study his Bible and the first verse he saw was "Judas went out and hanged himself." Not wanting to stop there of course, the man flipped again to another verse and read, "Go and do thou likewise." The man was shocked but, hoping for clarification, he tried one more time and came to "Whatsoever thou doest, do quickly"!

SPIRITUAL SHOWERS is a method of Bible study to discover what God really wants to say, to you, personally. The term "SPIRITUAL SHOWERS" comes from Psalm 119:9-16 which say's;

Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed thereto according to thy word. With my whole heart have I sought thee:O let me not wander from thy commandments.Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. Blessed art thou, O Lord: teach me thy statutes. With my lips have I declared all the judgments of thy mouth.I have rejoiced in the way of thy testimonies, as much as in all riches. I will meditate in thy precepts, and have respect unto thy ways. I will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy word (KJV)

Each of us has our own rituals for personal hygiene, yet few of us have such a systematic approach for spiritual cleansing. That’s where we need SPIRITUAL SHOWERS.

a. Bible
b. Notebook and pen or pencil
c. Strong’s Concordance
d. Nave’s Topical Bible (optional)

What we commonly refer to as The Bible is really a TRANSLATION.
It is impossible to translate much of the original Hebrew and Greek into English without losing shades of meaning. The Strong’s and the Nave’s are lifetime investments that really are "a must" if you are serious about digging into God’s word. (When you shop for your Strong’s Concordance, do be sure that you purchase one for the same version of the Bible that you use.) For those who have a computer, there are some excellent Bible programs to consider in addition to, or instead of, purchasing the books.

Many of the definitions in the original text will surprise you when you see the fullness of what they really mean. For example, take the word "respect" in Psalm 119:15. What do you imagine when you hear the word, "respect"?

Webster’s dictionary defines it as "to consider worthy of high regard" or "to refrain from interfering with." But When you look it up in the Hebrew, you will find that it also means, "to scan, behold, look intently at, regard with pleasure" (among others.) What a beautiful thought to learn that respect for God’s ways means not only to highly regard them and to refrain from interfering with them, but actually to behold them with pleasure.

Quite A Difference!

Perhaps this is one reason that God exhorts us in 2 Timothy 3:16, Study to show thyself approved unto God,a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth

When we use systematic study to rightly divide the Word, we can grasp it in a whole new dimension.

1. Write out one verse of Scripture completely.

2. Pray for conviction, application, and wisdom.

3. Circle the key words in the verse, look them up in the original Hebrew or Greek, and write down their meanings.

4. Wait … Meditate.

5.Write one paragraph on "My First Thoughts".

6. Be specific. Avoid generalities, avoid plurals. Finding out what the verse"means" is much less important than giving one detailed, practical application for your life.

7. Claim God’s power to put what you have learned into practice.

Stay on one topic until you receive at least partial healing; you wouldn't jump into the shower and just wash one elbow! As you do your SPIRITUAL SHOWERS (aim for at least 15 minutes of writing per day), you will begin to experience God’s power and love in your life as never before.

That He might sanctify and cleanse it with the
washing of water by the word. EPHESIANS 5:26
